Question of the day #2

Question 2

In France, the word for “birthday” is “anniversaire“, but in Canada, they call it “une fête” as in “party” or “celebration”. “Fête” is also a saint’s day in the Catholic calendar, so it is always very strange to hear Canadians talk about their “fête”. So of course, to say “happy birthday”, they won’t say “Bon anniversaire!” like the French, but they will say: “Bonne fête!”.
