I've spent the past 20+ years helping over 4,000 student from around the world become fluent in French. 

I'm a French teacher, linguist at heart, and founder of Language City.

At the age of 15, after studying 2 or 3 hours a day, knowing all the grammar by heart, and after memorizing entire vocabulary books, I went to the US for the 1st time only to realize I couldn't understand a word of English. 

It took me years of full immersion, being proactive and asking questions to become truly bilingual.

• I found out many rules I'd learned were either inaccurate or partially true.

• I was missing 80% of the useful vocabulary I needed to hold a conversation.

• There were quite a few useful structures I'd never learned in school.

• No one had taught me the informal contractions Americans use when speaking.

For the first years of my career, I was guilty of doing like all other French teachers... 


I'd open random textbooks to "teach" my students. 

All those textbook were extremely boring...

It is because approximately 80% of what you learn in all French courses out there is BESIDE THE POINT! (I mean it 100%)

1) The explanations you get for all grammar rules are always the same everywhere you look: vague and/or inaccurate theories.

2) Traditional French courses will waste your time on structures that are useless if not plain wrong, and won't teach you many useful structures that have simply never appeared in a book before.

3) The vocabulary you'll learn is always the same from course to course. It is too often archaic. You will never learn more than 20% of the useful vocabulary you would need in immersion (I know, I've been there myself!).

4) You will never learn a fraction of the useful idiomatic expressions & phrases that you need to function in French. They make up for about 20% of what we say everyday.

5) Last but not least, there is not a single French class that will teach you how the French naturally drop many sounds when speaking. They'll drop letters, syllables and entire words which will lead them to alter the sounds of many words. Unless you know those pronunciation patterns, French will always remain a completely foreign language to you. You might be able to read some of it at best, but you won't be able to understand the spoken word.
